It’s unfortunate that so many fatal crashes involve drunk driving. Even today, with stiffer penalties and more awareness, there are still far too many accidents involving alcohol. This past March, there was a tragic example of this near Santa Barbara, CA.

A 41-year-old local woman died and two others suffered minor to moderate injuries in a crash on Highway 101 caused by a drunk driver. Rosario Silvestre, a Goleta resident, died after being ejected from the backseat of a Volkswagen Jetta that flipped multiple times, according to a California Highway Patrol incident report. She was not wearing a seatbelt.

“The white Mercedes approached the Volkswagen from behind at a high rate of speed, and it was reported to be unable to maintain its designated traffic lane,” according to the incident report. “The right front corner of the Mercedes struck the left rear corner of the Volkswagen, causing the driver of the Volkswagen to lose control.”

CHP officers found Fabian Maduena’s Mercedes pulled off on the right shoulder of the highway several miles from the scene.  Maduena, of Hollister, CA was arrested for allegedly driving under the influence and fleeing the scene of the crash, among other violations.
