Rhode Island Criminal Lawyer
The Providence Journal reports that using a $30,000 dollar grant from the Department of Mental
Health and Retardation, police officers in Rhode Island are getting trained on how to
deal with mentally ill people in a more positive and peaceful way. After three emotionally
disturbed men died in
police custody, the program was initiated in 2008. Officers partake in a three day training
program where they are taught how to recognize and respond to the mentally ill;
they are taught to reduce field chaos, make eye contact, and continuously
assure safety and security. On Monday,
13 officers completed the program and their success was celebrated in District
Court.
